The day teachers meet parents

It seems that Mr Bharat & Miss Tham will win the Most Popular Male & Female Teachers in this year's Teacher's Day. If there is SMS voting of course & also is there such an award. Dont think there is! Why did I say so? Bcoz there are so many parents at both teacher's table at PTM held just now. Well, pity some teachers who have to stand because space constraints as it was held at the foyer. Regarding the parent's reaction of their child result, I would say parents are pleased. Anyway, watever your results are dont be demotivated as there maybe shocking surprises in A Level Nov 2009 like some1 from U2Sc4 is the Best Student in Brunei or even some1 from U2H6 beating Sc students. This is Teo the not-so friendly Editor reporting for The Youth Generation.

Entertaiment first news...

I actually wnt to start wth my idol S.H.E first but since these days they dnt really hve much new.So nxt post lah.Let just start wth Brunei most handsome man Mr.Wu Chi Chun (Wu Chun).Yupe tat become his name where all his entertaiment friends call him cos his name in Hot Shot movie is tat.

Taken from Taiwan Reader's Digest and translated,

The new generation of idol superstar, Wu Chun has a very handsome appearance. He can sing and act and has been out for 3 yrs. Rapidly becoming famous in 3 countries including Japan and Korea. Fans only know that he's from Brunei, comes from a privileged family background and is in every sense of the term " the knight in shining armour". However, not known he is also at the same time a skilled and experienced business man

Not yet 30yrs old, Wu Chun in his home town in Brunei has opened 2 luxurious gyms, also takes on the responsibility of managing a worlds famous watch company, has 2 nutrient shops and also numerous gym equipments representative.

Although Wu Chun is very modest, indicating that his income compared to the Brunei Royal Family is simply a drop in a bucket, but he will not hesitate to speak about earning money. For him in terms of earning money seemingly is not difficult. As early on as 15 yrs old, he planned and held a Brunei worldwide national inter-school university basketball competition, earning his 1st income in his youth of 1000 Brunei dollar (BND) (U.S. dollar equivalent of about $700 )

Wu Chun said "To attract University groups to compete wasn't hard, I learnt the NBA 3 point game, gaining the highest scores, learning methods of the rebound king. Faxing, handing out leaflets to all the big schools, asking them to form a team of 5 to come register. Because I organised so that the game would be more fun than a normal competition, 30 groups came. Each group paid a registration fee of $80 BND, so the total came to $2400 ; The drinks at the venue and the trophy cup I had one by one searched for companies to sponsor us for free. Taking away the $50 fee for the referee, the rent of $500 and miscellaneous expenses, I made a clean profit of $1000".

Who said a 15yr old boy "with no hair on his upper lip, can't work fast" ? Wu Chun said maybe it was because he was very young, hot blooded and sincere so the company and the competing university students particularly trusted him. 2 Years after when he was 17 yrs old, he opened a fashionable pool (snooker) shop that was a sensation in Brunei. Thinking about the 1st time being a boss, Wu Chun very pleased of himself said “ I went to Australia to go to high school, not even reaching 3 months I wanted to run back home to Brunei. I went with friends to play pool to relieve the boredom, seeing how a pool shop with just a few pool tables could earn money, so I thought why don't I just open one".

Wu Chun said that for the 3months he was in Australia, he learnt every style and technique to blend alcohol and drinks. Thinking of Brunei's pool shops they didn't have a bar, " If I put in a nice bar stand and become the bartender myself, the cost of one cup only costs $1 BND, selling it at $5 BND, the profit return would be 80%!".

10 pool tables, interior decoration, 12 staff members salary and the addition of every months rent of 540 BND, Him and his friend together took out $15 000 BND to open the store. Never thought that once the store opened it would immediately become extremely busy, With every cup of his special blend of different styled beverage, within a few months he recuperated the revenue.

" A business earning money there will defiantly be people that will copy, close by like a swarm of wasps have opened a lot of pool shops". Wu Chun said taking advantage of the shop's popularity at it's highest, he persuaded his partner to let go of the shop, both earning $15 000 BND and also the shop's TV, stereo, pool tables etc..."the aftermath of war".

Wu Chun spoke frankly, his father is engaged with real estate business, the enterprise spreads across China, Singapore and Brunei. From his memory in his childhood home's garage, there were 2 branded cars worth $1 million. Since childhood he never had to worry about food and clothes. Every month he would get $150 BND pocket money to spend, during the new year the red pocket would hold a lucky amount of money, every year he would receive $1688 BND (meaning continue to be wealthy). His father would also take the whole family abroad for a big spending spree, everyone each year would get $30 000 NT to spend on famous brand clothes and accessories.

It is reasonable to say that Wu Chun can be at ease and be a "rich man's son", but he said, because he's always want to make money to buy a Subaru sports car that belongs to him, so from childhood the pocket money his parents gave him he wouldn't waste it. His father knew that him opening up a pool shop would never be able to earn the money to buy the car, so while he sent him off to Australia for University he bought him a car. Wu Chun said " I really do regret that I was so fascinated in modifying cars I almost wasted all my savings".

The today's Wu Chun doesn't like famous brands, doesn't play with modified cars, but determined to open up 10 multinational gym chain stores. Wu Chun deeply expressed that a lot of people see him release albums, act in films, do adverts, so busy running round in circles, only sleeping 5-6hrs in a day and when he has a few minutes to spare he will open up his computer and use email while overseas to manage the trivial matters of the 2 gyms in Brunei.

Will he be too fierce over earning money? "Actually I don't care about the money. Money can't buy you health, I knew this when I was 25yrs old when my mother passed away from pancreas cancer". He said, that year was his university graduation and he had planned to return to Brunei, his father suddenly wanted him to 1st fly to Singapore to meet with his mother, in high spirits he arrived at the hotel , however to see his mother's sallow face. Apparently his mum had hidden the fact for 7 yrs. The fact that the cancer relapse had already worsen had completely driven me crazy.

He said, choking back tears "I accompanied my mum running through Russia, America, China, Singapore, Seeing her receive chemotherapy, nutritional therapy, using up all of the possible treatments, but in the end the cancer continued to spread to the liver, lymph, the whole stomach becoming bloated. Even through the doctor used all his efforts to drain the ascites (fluid in the stomach) it would not drain completely..... My heart broke"

After his mother past away, Wu Chun decided he wanted to become for the rest of his life a child that would not let down his mother. He said" My father will one day get old, I want to become the "mountain" for the rest of my father's life!"

He emphasised towards in terms of comparing the opening up of a gym and pool shop it's only on a scale a few times bigger, the importance is that you need to save on all the unnecessary expenses. At the same time buying gym equipment, fitness nutritious foods. Other people directly order from overseas, he will go on the internet and will compare prices; he discovered if you become the representative of the company 1st he can half the expenses and he can sell the imported goods to other gyms again earning money from the access fee.

"For everything, you have to personally put in effort and do yourself, using all your strength. Like me applying to become Brunei's gym equipment company representative, I really did put in a lot of money because there's only one place within the government, running slowly and making long distance telephone calls to foreign countries to explain that even though Brunei's demand isn't that big, I will still defiantly use all my strength to develop it, so when the customer ordered one, I could only order one. The head office believed in me becoming their representative and that for the future there would be space to expand, so they also accepted".

Asking Wu Chun what kind of rich person does he want to be? he replied " When my mother was still here , she'd regularly took me to the nursing home and the children's home to donate money and other necessities. She adopted 2 poor children from Africa, After my work I also adopted 2 ; so after my mother passed away it had changed to 4. I want to have money, to have power to do more charity, and still be able to rely on my own efforts to take my father to travel the whole world, would it not be very happy?" He said he doesn't do risky investments, he doesn't waste money, as time goes by he will become the person in charge of a multinational fitness group.

SMSA Hall of Fame May 2009

SPN 21 was aimed to increase the number of students taking Science stream to 40% of all students by 2011. Science stream is a choice for students whom their future plans are to work with BSP in areas such as geophysist, mechanical engineer, engineer, etc. Recently, there are also some hype about bio-technology. However, there maybe little/no job opportunities in Brunei. The closest would be Biopolis Singapore. On 20th of May 2009, a prize presentation ceremony was held for the Primary, Secondary Science & Maths Olympiad as well as National Physics & Maths Olympiad. SMSA send 2 students to participate in the National Physics Olympiad. They were Teo Fwu Chyi & Zulhilmi both from PreU2/Sc 1. Teo Fwu Chyi obtained a gold medal. It is a good learning experience for 26 students that took part in NPO as quoting the coordinator as saying to The Brunei Times, the questions are set at 1st year university standard. Congrats SMSA & Teo Fwu Chyi from The Youth Generation. May SMSA produce even more success stories in the near future.

The Show Where America Decides

Yes, America has decided who they want to be their President last November! Now, America has to decide again who they want to be the next American Idol. Is it Adam Lambert or Kris Allen? The power is in your hands Americans, vote wisely. So, The Youth Generation Entertainment Desk have prepared the followings from the sources of The Sun.
Adam Lambert often reminds this article writer of The Sun of what a love child by Freddy Mercury and Joan Jett would look like. This highly-stylised singer can rock it with the best of them and still deliver on ballads.
Ok, the finals, which have been telecast live & primetime encore via satellite from Nokia Theatre few hours ago , have seen both Adam & Kris receiving mixed comments for both of their song performance. The first song which is producer's choice saw Kris getting more positive comments than Adam, witn Simon Cowell (our favourite judge aka criticiser) saying that Adam is too over with his performance. Meanwhile, on the second song which is their own choice, saw both of them receiving mixed comments from all the judges. Simon Cowell said that "I didn't knew if America voted for the correct people, but after watching Kris's 2nd performance, I retract it back".
Before we sum up,this posting, here are a SW anaylsis of Adam Lambert & Kris Allen chance of winning the American Idol 2009 in an all-man showdown after last year's David Cook Vs David Archuleta
KRIS ALLEN
Strengths
» He is like a slow burner, starting to become a real
contender only later in the competition.
» Excellent at rearranging music to suit him, the acoustic versions of She Works Hard For Her Money and Cold Hearted being good examples.
» Has a very likeable and humble demeanour which makes him more identifiable to audiences.
» By being deemed a dark horse, he has the advantage of surprising everyone each week. » Has a strong fan base, thanks to his talent and good looks.
» Not that over-hyped so he can still spring a few surprises and steal the crown.
Weaknesses
» Too low key in his performances and has yet to really upstage Lambert.
» Still flying under the radar and will only win if he can project himself more forcefully.
» Very limited range in terms of vocals and type of music genres.
ADAM LAMBERT
Strengths » Can sing any type of music genres and even manage
to put his signature to the songs.
» Can hit the high notes and the low tones with equal élan.
» Memorable even when mangling Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire.
» Able to pick the right songs with good arrangement to suit his style of singing.
» Surprised and amazed audiences and judges with his subtle but impactful performances of Tracks of My Years and Mad World.
» Practically crowned the winner by Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul.
Weaknesses
» Too much hype.
» Many feel he is too over-the-top.
» Tends to become theatrical during his performance which only works well in rock numbers or R&B songs.
Who will be the next American Idol? Is it favourite gothic styled Adam Lambert or dark-horse Kris Allen? The answer will be revealed tomorrow Brunei/Asian region time 8 a.m. in a 2 hr spectacular musical extravaganza. The season finale and celebration will see the Top 13 finalists reunite on stage one last time before America’s vote is revealed. Former Idol winners Carrie Underwood and David Cook are expected to perform. Other guest artistes making a special appearance include Lionel Richie, Cyndi Lauper, Queen Latifah, the Black Eyed Peas and Keith Urban.
This is The Youth Generation signing off! Students are you gonna escape class 2morrow to watch it?
Update: A record 100 million votes have been cast but a shocking result where Kris Allen is the 9th American Idol

It's All About H1N1

Hey guys. Miji here, reporting for The Youth Generation. As you all know, many countries have been already affected by a new pandemic called H1N1, well it's not that new since it ever occured during the past century. So, what is H1N1?

H1N1 (also called swine flu) refers to influenza caused by those strains of influenza virus, called swine influenza virus(SIV), that usually infect pigs. Swine influenza is common in pigs in the midwestern United States (and occasionally in other states), Mexico, Canada, South America, Europe (including the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Italy), Kenya, Mainland China, Taiwan, Japan and other parts of eastern Asia.

The 2009 flu outbreak in humans, known as "swine flu", is due to a new strain of influenza A virus subtype H1N1 that contained genes most closely related to swine influenza. The origin of this new strain is unknown. However, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) reports that this strain has not been isolated in pigs. This strain can be transmitted from human to human, and causes the normal symptoms of influenza.

Pigs can become infected with human influenza, and this appears to have happened during the 1918 flu pandemic and the 2009 flu outbreak.

There are three possible ways of transmission of Swine Flu:

-Transmission between pigs

The main route of transmission is through direct contact between infected and uninfected animals. These close contacts are particularly common during animal transport. The direct transfer of the virus probably occurs either by pigs touching noses, or through dried mucus. Airborne transmission through the aerosols produced by pigs coughing or sneezing are also an important means of infection. The virus usually spreads quickly through a herd, infecting all the pigs within just a few days.

-Transmission to human

People who work with poultry and swine, especially people with intense exposures, are at increased risk of zoonotic infection with influenza virus endemic in these animals, and constitute a population of human hosts in which zoonosis and reassortment can co-occur.

-Interaction with avian H5N1 in pigs

Pigs are unusual as they can be infected with influenza strains that usually infect three different species: pigs, birds and humans. This makes pigs a host where influenza viruses might exchange genes, producing new and dangerous strains.

Signs & Symptoms

in humans:fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

Preventions

Prevention of pig to human transmission: The transmission from swine to human is believed to occur mainly in swine farms where farmers are in close contact with live pigs. Although strains of swine influenza are usually not able to infect humans this may occasionally happen, so farmers and veterinarians are encouraged to use a face mask when dealing with infected animals.

Prevention of human to human transmission: Influenza spreads between humans through coughing or sneezing and people touching something with the virus on it and then touching their own nose or mouth. The swine flu in humans is most contagious during the first five days of the illness although some people, most commonly children, can remain contagious for up to ten days.

Treatment

If a person becomes sick with swine flu, antiviral drugs can make the illness milder and make the patient feel better faster. They may also prevent serious flu complications. For treatment, antiviral drugs work best if started soon after getting sick (within 2 days of symptoms). Beside antivirals, palliative care, at home or in hospital, focuses on controlling fevers and maintaining fluid balance.

(Should there be I love Nasi Katok t-shirt?) (newurbanmale.com/235guys.blogspot.com)

Event Update:BDNAC Talk

On, the 5th of May 2009, a talk was organised for the PreU2 students in the Dewan. It was regarding the accreditation and its importance in Brunei Darussalam. It was presented by Cikgu Haji Adenin, Senior Education Officer, Brunei Darussalam National Accreditation Council.

BDNAC was formed as the sole accreditation body in the Sultanate in 1990, with the consent of His Majesty. Accreditation generally means the verification of your qualification, by the government of Brunei should you wish to apply for scholarships.

Some of the documents that are required for applying accreditation include:
  1. A copy of your O/A Level certificate
  2. Letter of offer from the university you have enrolled in
  3. IC Photocopy

Some of the universities that are regconised by BDNAC in the world include Harvard University, MIT, University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, University of New South Wales, Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Monash University, Nanyang Technology University, National University of Singapore, many others. The most important point to be noted is Top 10 or 50 universities in countries like US, UK, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore most probably are regconised. In Australia, its the Group of 8. However, according to the presenter, universities that are not in their list, may also be regconised on a case-by-case basis.

For those who are unable to further their studies overseas, Brunei do offer some courses locally, mainly Business Studies & Computing courses. However, engineering courses which is one of the popular courses are still not available locally.

The talk ended at around 9.40 am, and further continued with a Q&A sessions. From my observation, most of the questions are regarding scholarships, which is totally out of the scope. It is suggested that future accreditation talks for students, should also have officers from Scholarship Section, MOE to clarify doubts.

Which one do you prefer?

Remember remember, its a sunny Saturday, 2nd May 2009 between 7.30 a.m.-8.00 a.m. The PreU students of SMSA know what happen during that particular time, and they are freaking 'not liking it'. (For those who have no idea on what happen on that day, may I suggest that you check one of our Youth Blogger Team blogs, to get an idea). Ok, Im not here neither to talk about what had happened or the 5-lettered word that had been uttered 4 times. Im here to talk about teachers, no Im are not going to criticise any teachers, if that is the case The Youth Generation is in a very deep trouble!

The question is do you prefer a teacher like Professor Snape (cool, a no-nonsense teacher) or do you prefer a teacher like Mr JP(always complaint he is sick, always being ridiculed by students, highly qualified, always utter sarcastic comments with intention(dengan sengaja)] or Miss C (funny, good, helpful, kind). Please note that these names are not the names of teachers in SMSA, Angie & Magnescia as well as a few other people know these teachers well, with exception of Professor Snape, unless there is really a Hogwarts in the world with the big Hagrid caretaker. Well, thank god in SMSA, we dont have any Professor Snape who will mumble non-stop, or cast a spell to you if you dont finish your work. My experience with SMSA tutors had been okay, as in having 'sense of humour', 'sense of angriness', etc. Whatever it is, teachers have to be role model for the students.
