On, the 5th of May 2009, a talk was organised for the PreU2 students in the Dewan. It was regarding the accreditation and its importance in Brunei Darussalam. It was presented by Cikgu Haji Adenin, Senior Education Officer, Brunei Darussalam National Accreditation Council.
BDNAC was formed as the sole accreditation body in the Sultanate in 1990, with the consent of His Majesty. Accreditation generally means the verification of your qualification, by the government of Brunei should you wish to apply for scholarships.
Some of the documents that are required for applying accreditation include:
- A copy of your O/A Level certificate
- Letter of offer from the university you have enrolled in
- IC Photocopy
Some of the universities that are regconised by BDNAC in the world include Harvard University, MIT, University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, University of New South Wales, Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Monash University, Nanyang Technology University, National University of Singapore, many others. The most important point to be noted is Top 10 or 50 universities in countries like US, UK, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore most probably are regconised. In Australia, its the Group of 8. However, according to the presenter, universities that are not in their list, may also be regconised on a case-by-case basis.
For those who are unable to further their studies overseas, Brunei do offer some courses locally, mainly Business Studies & Computing courses. However, engineering courses which is one of the popular courses are still not available locally.
The talk ended at around 9.40 am, and further continued with a Q&A sessions. From my observation, most of the questions are regarding scholarships, which is totally out of the scope. It is suggested that future accreditation talks for students, should also have officers from Scholarship Section, MOE to clarify doubts.
